Zukiswa Wanner on 2017 Commonwealth Short Story Prize judging panel

Zukiswa Wanner will be among the six-judge panel for the 2017 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Wanner is a South African Journalist and novelist who has penned four novels and two children’s books.

Her first novel ‘The Madams (2006)’ was shortlisted for the K. Sello Duiker Award while her third ‘Men of the South (2010)’ was shortlisted for both the Commonwealth Best Book Africa Region and Herman C. Bosman Awards. The Writivism initiative board member has facilitated various writing workshops in Kenya, Uganda, Germany, Zimbabwe, and England.

Wanner was born in Zambia to a Zimbabwean mother and a South African father, she is a free-spirited individual with a passion for traveling. The author currently lives in Kenya where she is a contributor to Kenya’s Saturday Nation newspaper and The Weekend Star. Her writings have also been published in other top publications such as; The Guardian (UK), Sunday Times (SA), New African, Mail & Guardian (SA), and True Love (SA).

Wanner has been the judge for the Writivism Short Story Prize and also sat on the five-member judging panel for the Pan-African Etisalat Prize for Literature 2015-2016.

Other judges are:  Mahesh Rao (Asia); Jacqueline Baker (Canada and Europe); Jacob Ross (Caribbean) and Vilsoni Hereniko (Pacific), and the chair is the novelist Kamila Shamsie.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize which targets citizens living in the commonwealth member countries is currently on its sixth year. Winners are categorized into two groups: Regional winners who are drawn from six regions and overall winner who goes home with £5,000 (approx. $6,500).

Last year’s regional winner from African was South African Faraaz Mahomed while the overall winner was Kulkami Parashar from India.

The 2017 Commonwealth Short Story Prize is currently open for Submissions until November, 1.
